I’ve been neglecting the I Just Disappear blog lately, but I’ve had a good reason: after some experiments with the vlog format, I’ve launched a new YouTube series called “Adam Walks Around.” We’ve already got two episodes up (three, if you count the spontaneous vlog that turned into the pilot of the concept), and the response has been pretty good so far.
The idea is simple. Ever since I’ve been here in southeast Asia, my favorite pasttime has simply been walking around, exploring and talking to people. I’ve occasionally filmed things but I always figured doing a proper show would be too time-consuming and taxing, and not something I really wanted to do.
Once I tried it, though, I realized it was a perfect fit for me. It’s something that I love to do and I’ve always been someone that’s connected other people by basically being willing to barge into situations and make a fool of myself to make something happen. One of the nice things about southeast Asia is the locals here by and large are tolerant of this character trait and are somewhat amused by it. It’s one of the ways I feel at home here.
The exciting thing is it gives an overarching purpose to me being here…a through line to my experiences and a way to share what’s been, so far at least, a solitary experience, a steady stream of amazing events that fade from memory because there’s no one to tell. I also love to be able to show the stories of the people here and the places I go that tourists don’t go. These are in many ways untold stories.
Of course, many people have done things like this…we just lost one of the all-time greats, Anthony Bourdain. I don’t expect that it will turn into anything like that…but it might turn into something. I think it’s got its own unique flavor and even though it’s taking up a lot of time and not generating too much money yet, it feels like what I need to be doing right now.
I’ll still be continuing the I Just Disappear blog, of course. Some things are better suited to the written word just as other things are better for video. But if you’d like to see me continue in this vein, consider becoming a patron or a subscriber. But more than that, just check out the new show and if you like it, please subscribe to the KarmaFrog1 channel on youtube, and spread the word.
